1980 Mustang Club of America Eastern Nationals

May 24-26, 1980

Knoxville, Tennessee

Max and Bernice Epps having fun at the 1980 MCA Eastern Nationals in Knoxville!! Ralph Smith was one of the big winners at this show, taking home Best of Show in Senior Division Modified and 1st Place in Senior Division Modified Convertible.
Bill (a.k.a. "Betty") Davis claimed that he and his Royal Maroon 1969 Boss 429 were No. 1... And proved it by winning Best of Show in Junior Division Stock and 1st Place in Junior Division Boss Class!!  For some reason, MCA registered Bill as "Betty" Davis at this show... of course we gave him a hard time about it!!
Bill Henderson won 1st Place in the 1971-73 Coupe Class in Junior Division. Freddie Jones won 1st Place in 1971-73 Fastback Class in Senior Division.
Betty Cox won Best of Show Senior Division Stock and 1st Place in 1965-66 Fastback Senior Division Ernie Stout's 1968 Mustang Wagon drew lots of attention
Bobby Carroll's 1971 Boss 351... and Ronnie Carroll's 1971 Boss 351 (behind Brian Morelock's 1968 GT Fastback) all in the new Unrestored Class.  Brian finished in 3rd Place in this new class.
Check out the square headlights on this 1965 modified coupe. Long before "continuation" cars and "replicas" were commonplace, here's one of the first fake 1965 Shelby's I'd ever seen.  It was a very correct fake 1965 GT350R.
Here's a very nice 1965 GT Convertible equipped with a "K" Code 289 Hipo and 4-speed... if we could only build a time machine for Steve Smith... Say you'd rather have a fastback... well here's a 1965 GT Fastback equipped with a "K" Code 289 Hipo and 4-speed.
  1967 Shelby
1968 Acapulco Blue GT 390 Fastback with 4-speed... where's that time machine when you need it... 1968 GTCS "California Special" in green.
1968 Shelby 1969 Shelby
And a couple of 1970 Boss 302's...
Shown on the left is a 1965 Modified Coupe owned by Doug Gass.  It won Best of Show in Junior Division Modified and 1st Place in Modified Coupe Junior Division.

In September of 1980, Brian Morelock covered his Mustang with many layers of newspapers, chicken wire, tissue paper, and spray paint to turn it into a float in the very first Homecoming Parade for the new Sullivan South High School... high school guys will do some dumb things to impress girls.  The Mustang survived without a scratch or overspray...
